Points of Interest In Vieng Phoukha
In earlier years when the road between Houeisai and Luang Namtha was much worse and the trip took two days, Vieng Phoukha was the place that travelers would overnight. Vieng Phoukha may yet see a renaissance when its treasures are discovered by travelers. In addition to an abundance of ethnic groups like the Akha, Hmong, Khmu and Lahu and bordering the Nam Ha Protected Area; Vieng Phoukha holds the ruins of a hidden ancient city and unexplored caves galore. There are also mountain trails connecting the district with Nalae and Long Districts. Soon there will be a road connecting Vieng Phoukha and Muang Long, which passes by a large waterfall in Muang Long. The Ancient City In Vieng Phoukha are the remnants of an ancient walled city ( Kou Vieng). Not much is know and may legends abound. Old timers still tell stories of how before the revolution no one would enter the area for fear of the spirits. After the revolution, the party made an effort to eliminate superstition. Consequently they encouraged locals to pillage brick from the site to construct new houses. Many locals now attribute strange occurrences and disturbing illnesses and death to this pillaging.
