In earlier years when the road between Houeisai and Luang Namtha was much worse and the trip took two days, Vieng Phoukha was the place that travelers would overnight.
Vieng Phoukha may yet see a renaissance when its treasures are discovered by travelers. In addition to an abundance of ethnic groups like the Akha, Hmong, Khmu and Lahu and bordering the Nam Ha Protected Area; Vieng Phoukha holds the ruins of a hidden ancient city and unexplored caves galore. There are also mountain trails connecting the district with Nalae and Long Districts. Soon there will be a road connecting Vieng Phoukha and Muang Long, which passes by a large waterfall in Muang Long.

Trekking
In 2003 the European Union Micro Project supported the formation of an eco-guide service to surrounding areas. In early 2004 the guides are operating a regular trekking service. For more details click here.
Nam Aeng Cave - the cave about 12 km north of Vieng Phoukha and is found just to the north of the village of the same name just a few meters from main road to Luang Namtha.
A small stream runs from the mouth of the cave. Every year around 13 Jan locals gather to see a shaman summon the large fish from the cave, who then offer themselves up for a feast to the gathered crowd.
Nam Sing Caves - 20 km north of town just south of the village of Ban Nam Sing. Here can be found two caves. No more info currently available.
Sam Hee See Nom Cave - a 4 hour walk from Vieng Phoukha ( now accessible by car) near the village of Ban Nam Mai. This cave once held a scared Buddha which has now been pillaged. During the revolution served as a hide-out and meeting place.
Ban Boolahn Cave - located a hour or more walk up the mountain from the village of Boolahn around 15 km north of Vieng Phoukha. Villagers of Boolahn harvest bats here for sale in the local market.
Phou Lek Cave - is reportedly a very large cave located 3 hours by foot through the jungle from Ban Nam Fa ( south of Vieng Phoukha).
The Ancient City
In Vieng Phoukha are the remnants of an ancient walled city ( Kou Vieng). Not much is know and may legends abound. Old timers still tell stories of how before the revolution no one would enter the area for fear of the spirits. After the revolution, the party made an effort to eliminate superstition. Consequently they encouraged locals to pillage brick from the site to construct new houses. Many locals now attribute strange occurrences and disturbing illnesses and death to this pillaging.
The city is near the old French air field and not far from the village of Ban Nong Kham.
