Clean Up the World Event at That Poum Pouk, Luang Namtha

Luang Namtha- On Saturday 21 Feb 04 12 people gathered at That Poum Pouk to pick up litter left over from the That’s 3 day festival earlier in the month. The 12 people were from the Provincial tourism office, the ecotourism guide service, Wildside and The Boat Landing Guest House. They spent 4 hours picking up the litter and filled two pickups.

That Poum Pouk is a popular tourist attraction in Luang Namtha visited by many foreign visitors to the province. Damaged by a 500-pound bomb during the Second Indochina War, That Phoum Phouk is a little known archeological site located 6 km from the Luang Namtha Airport. Built in 1628, this was once the most respected and famous pagoda in Namtha District. In 2003 a new That was constructed and dedicated beside the ruins of the old and the traditional festival revived.

Ecotourism is a responsible form of travel which cares for the community and tries to put a positive spin on tourism. In cleaning up the litter from the That Poum Pouk Festival the guides, the provincial tourism staff, The Boat Landing Guest House and the Wildside have demonstrated their commitment to the principles of ecotourism.

This was the first time that any group has volunteered to clean up litter in a public area. Some of the materials used during the clean up were donated by Clean Up the World ( www.cleanuptheworld.org), an international organization based out of Australia.
