The Black-cheeked Crested Gibbon is only found in northern Lao PDR, southern China and northern Vietnam.
Black-cheeked Crested Gibbon is considered the 4th most endangered gibbon species in the world and the most endangered species in Lao PDR. It’s listed as Globally Threatened-Endangered in the IUCN Red List. In 2000 4 groups were found in the Nam Ha NPA. During the 2005 survey only the songs of one group were recorded.
One of the priorities of the Nam Ha NPA and the Wildlife Conservation Society is to conserve the Black-cheeked Crested Gibbon. Protected area staff are:
conducting public awareness in villages near gibbon habitat,
patrolling to enforce laws that protect gibbons and their habitat, and
working in partnership with ecotourism authorities and operators to develop alternative income for villages near gibbon habitat.
For the first time in the Lao PDR the private sector has joined the conservation effort. In an historic agreement Green Discovery Laos, The Boat Landing Guest House signed an agreement with the Nam Ha National Protected Area and the Wildlife Conservation Society to raise funds for the conservation of the Black-Cheeked Crested Gibbon.
How can you help?
You can support Black-Cheeked Crested Gibbon conservation activities when you buy a Friends of Black-cheeked Gibbon T-shirt at The Boat Landing Guest House or from the Wildlife Conservation Society. 100% of T-shirt profits are used to support gibbon conservation activities in the Nam Ha NPA.
Other People Helping the Gibbon
Visit the exciting program in Bokeo called The Gibbon Experience where you can spend three days in the tree tops in Gibbon habitat and your money goes to fund conservation efforts for the Gibbon. It is a good model for funding conservation activities in Laos and has some of the best forest around.
